Collection: Vane Pump Series
Hydraulic vane pumps provide smooth, quiet, and reliable fluid power delivery — particularly well-suited for medium-pressure industrial and mobile equipment applications. Their balanced design ensures low noise and vibration, making them a popular choice for equipment where operator comfort matters.
HE PUMP stocks a comprehensive range of vane pumps and vane pump cartridges for Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, and other major equipment brands. Each pump is tested to meet or exceed original performance specifications.
How Does a Vane Pump Work?
A vane pump uses a rotor with sliding vanes mounted off-center inside a circular housing (cam ring). As the rotor spins, centrifugal force pushes the vanes outward against the cam ring. The off-center mounting creates expanding and contracting chambers that draw in and push out hydraulic fluid.
Key advantages of this design:
- Smooth flow: Multiple vanes create continuous, nearly pulse-free output
- Quiet operation: Balanced pressure distribution reduces vibration and noise
- Self-compensating wear: Vanes extend as they wear, maintaining contact with the cam ring
- Compact size: High flow-to-size ratio compared to gear pumps at similar pressure
Types of Vane Pumps
- Fixed displacement vane pumps: Deliver constant flow at a set displacement. Used where consistent flow is required regardless of system pressure
- Variable displacement vane pumps: Adjust output flow based on system demand. More energy-efficient for applications with varying flow requirements
- Cartridge-style vane pumps: The internal working components (rotor, vanes, cam ring, side plates) are contained in a removable cartridge. When the pump wears out, simply replace the cartridge instead of the entire housing — saving time and money
Common Applications
- Industrial hydraulic power units: Presses, machine tools, injection molding equipment
- Construction equipment auxiliary systems: Pilot circuits, cooling fan drives, and auxiliary hydraulic functions
- Material handling: Forklifts, telehandlers, and reach stackers
- Agricultural equipment: Tractor hydraulic systems, sprayer pumps, and implement drives
- Mobile equipment: Steering systems and lift circuits where quiet operation is valued
Equipment We Cover
- Caterpillar: Excavators (320, 325, 330, 345 series), wheel loaders, and industrial applications
- Komatsu: PC series excavators and WA series wheel loaders
- Volvo: EC series excavators and L series wheel loaders
- Other Brands: JCB, Hitachi, John Deere, and various industrial hydraulic systems
Signs of Vane Pump Failure
- Increased noise or rattling from the pump (worn vanes or damaged cam ring)
- Reduced hydraulic flow or pressure
- Intermittent flow — output fluctuates under load
- External leaks at the pump housing or shaft seal
- Overheating hydraulic fluid (internal bypass from worn components)
Cartridge Replacement vs. Full Pump Replacement
Many vane pump failures can be resolved by replacing only the cartridge assembly — the rotor, vanes, cam ring, and side plates. Benefits:
- Lower cost: Cartridge kits cost a fraction of a complete pump
- Faster repair: Swap the cartridge in minutes instead of removing and replacing the entire pump
- Reuse existing housing: The pump housing and mounting hardware stay in place
Check our Vane Pump Cartridge Series for replacement cartridge kits.
Preventing Vane Pump Failure
- Keep fluid clean: Vane pumps are sensitive to contamination — replace filters on schedule
- Avoid cavitation: Ensure adequate inlet pressure and correct fluid viscosity for operating temperature
- Monitor operating temperature: Excessive heat degrades fluid and accelerates vane wear
- Replace cartridges proactively: If you notice rising noise levels, a cartridge swap now prevents a full failure later
